Good news! I’ve decided to make a free percent of goal production template that can be easily modified and used as a tool to help you generate quick reports.

Why? So that you can focus on the many other hats required for wear as a leader in the supply chain industry!

In my career I have often found the need to effectively report results on a frequent basis. The reporting frequency was dependent on which customer or boss I had at the time. Sometimes it was hourly reporting and sometimes daily.

The factor that remained constant was the need to quickly put the data together in an easy to read format.

My goal was to send a report that would garner the least amount of questions possible and hopefully limit the amount of emails, meetings and phone calls. If I could send out a report that answered all the stakeholders burning questions before they were asked, I won.

In the earlier stages of my career I would look for a template that I could use. Sadly, I found it difficult to find a template that worked for the project I had. Many were too complex and had to be modified. Even further, they often has some type of company branding that was difficult to remove.

I ended up making custom reporting tools from scratch with time I didn’t have. However, the reports had to be made.

If you need to show a simple visual that displays how close you are to hitting a goal you can download and use this free online Excel template to save time.

This is a completely free tool with no marketing gimmicks or gotchas. The purpose is to genuinely help. There is 0 branding and promotion. This is a simple link that will take you to an online Excel document that you can download and use. You may share the link if you choose or not.

Sending out a production report in this format is a great way to give a quick status update to show how close your team is to hitting a goal for the day.

You can quickly update the data and provide a brief summary in your email, along with a screenshot of the chart at any frequency required. Hour by hour is my favorite.

I’ve included the steps below so you can make this simple tracker for yourself.

If you don’t have the time you can download this free online Excel template  and modify the report to match your needs. Just follow the link provided, select “File” select “Save As” and then “download a copy.”

The workbook will download into whatever version of Excel you are using.

If you would like to make your own online based workbook, please find the instructions below:

Percent of Goal Report Template Excel Step 1: Prepare the data

Start with preparing the template for your data. For this exercise, I chose to use the online version of Excel.

Create a simple template displaying a column for the hour of the day and another column for the units per hour.

This example is for 1 day of production. Feel free to modify the table to meet your business needs.

In your table be sure to sum the actual totals and then enter the total number for your goal.

Also, be sure to calculate the percent achieved against your goal of 100%

Step 2: Select the four cells containing the Achieved % and Goal % names and percentages.

Select all 4 cells before inserting the clustered column chart

Step 3: Select Insert from the Excel ribbon and pick the clustered column chart.

The clustered column icon is all the way to the right in this image. Choose the one that looks like this.

You should see a chart that looks like this:

Let’s customize this chart so it has more meaning. We can start with naming the chart.

Step 4: Double left click the Chart Title box. Once selected the chart title box should look as depicted below and a side panel should pop up with formatting options.

Percent of Goal Report Template Excel Step 5: Enter the name of your Chart Title in the Chart Title box and hit enter.

The name will automatically transfer to the chart. If you would like to modify the position of the chart, font size or any other feature you can do so from the formatting pane as well.

Step 6: Next right click one of your columns of data. You can format the data series from here.

Step 7: Turn the data label feature on so the % data will show above your columns.

Step 8: Scroll down in the formatting pane to the bottom and turn the data table feature on.

I think adding a data table to a chart gives it a nice touch.

Step 9: If you scroll a little further you can modify the text of the table if you choose. Let’s make the text bold as a finishing touch.

If necessary, minimize your page size by using the plus or minus button at the bottom right corner of your online workbook to show the entire report if need be.

You can minimize by pressing the plus or minus button.

Percent of Goal Report Template Excel Final Step: Now screenshot your production report and email to the required stakeholders.

Before you email your report, be sure to “tell the story” surrounding the data in a few brief sentences. If you are sending out multiple updates per day and using the online version the chart will automatically update the percentages in this template as you populate new values in the “Units” column!

I also make custom reports in Excel for those with specific needs. If you need help reach out to me in the comments.
