Spread the love
Tomayto or Tomahto?

Consider the consumer. Personally, as a consumer, I do not want to be sold anything. Instead, I would want to be helped with my purchase. This may sound like a classic tomayto/tomahto situation but this most definitely is not the same.

Helping and selling works in tandem to create a more impactful buying experience for the customer. Sales can be rather easy if you follow 3 basic principles: sell yourself, pay attention, and help the customer purchase.

Know yourself and Sell Your Story

Image, information, and confidence are all part of your story. Use these three things to your advantage. Dress for the occasion. Do your research and be prepared. Be yourself, believe in yourself, trust your work, and display your personality.

Fall in Love With Paying Attention

Whether you are in retail sales, business to business, commission-based, salary, or any other form, making sales has a lot to do with your functional knowledge. Actively learn before, during, and after a sale. During and after are crucial. with each stage of the sale pay attention to the words customers choose to use. Understand their body language, and equally as important use your body language.

Be Eager to Help

Building rapport is essential in sales. Referrals and repeat customers can significantly improve your success. Ideally, you want the customer to understand you are helping them make a buying decision that works for theirs needs/wants. they will like their experience more. Be confident, align your goals together, push at the correct times, and remember you are working with a person. Be the solution.

The last bit

Personally, I have sold movie passes at Blockbuster Video, furniture, insurance, printing, shipping services, business-to-business, automobiles, and many others. The most satisfying sales being in furniture sales. I approached someone who was not helped but obviously needed help. She looked like she had come into the upscale store directly from working in a garden and needed help. No one was helping…. so I offered.

She went on to say she had been ignored due to how she was dressed. She was likely correct. I replied to the statement, “Until now. You were ignored until now.” I followed in with a smile, explained why I stopped to help her, and then I simply asked how I could help. She went on to place the largest order of furniture I have ever seen. It does not always work out this easy but in this caes it did perfectly. I sold myself, payed attention to her needs, and helped her complete the purchase.

She let me know she purposefully dressed down so her wealth would not be known. To be honest we were not the best store for her needs. I took the time with her and I was dedicated to finding a solution so she made our store work. She made the purchase because of me.

Sales can be frustrating. Only with time, failure, and success you can love the field. There are many horror stories when talking about sales; however, learning the process is very helpful in life. I believe everyone should work in sales, specifically commission sales, early in their adulthood. Here why click here.
